On September 1st 2011, the former LIT Tipperary integrated with Limerick Institute of Technology to become LIT Tipperary, the fifth school of LIT. The significantly enlarged third level institution now sees LIT with campuses in Limerick city, Thurles, Clonmel and Ennis enhancing higher education opportunities throughout the region. LIT now boasts an enrolment of almost 7,000 students across five campuses and three counties; Limerick, Tipperary and Clare.
The Tipperary college has always been renowned for its student-centred approach to teaching and learning, coupled with small class sizes and excellent student support services. Now coming under the banner of one of the biggest Institutes of Technology in the country, LIT Tipperary has considerable potential to develop as a major centre of third level education in the region.
The Thurles and Clonmel campuses have experienced rapid growth in student numbers in recent times reflecting the growing profile of the innovative courses on offer which provide students with a rich educational experience and real career prospects on graduation. All courses are developed in consultation with industry so graduates' skills are directly transferable to the workplace.
In 2011, new Level 8 honours degrees in Sports Strength and Conditioning and Digital Animation Production were launched and LIT Tipperary's growing suite of courses ranges from Social and Community Studies, Business, Accounting and Marketing to Games Design and Software Development, IT Support and Creative Multimedia. The emerging green energy sector is also well catered for with honours degrees in Smart Sustainable Energy and Environmental and Natural Resource Management. Further course development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level is on-going.
Benefitting from LIT's strong reputation in the enterprise arena and developed in partnership with the local Thurles Chamber of Commerce, a new Community Enterprise Centre has recently been completed at the Thurles campus with plans for a similar venture in Clonmel. With an emphasis on the integration of education, enterprise and development, the future for the new look LIT Tipperary looks bright indeed!
